Feline PKD is a deadly inherited disease that can be found in Persian cats, and sometimes in in a few other
breeds, including Himalayans and British Shorthairs. Today, DNA test are available to find out if your cat has it or
is at risk for it.

PKD, or Polycystic Kidney Disease, is found in approximately 36% of Persian cats. However, it can affect other
cat breeds as well. This disease causes the formation of small sacs of fluid in and around the cat’s kidneys. These
sacs are known as cysts. While removal of the cysts is not possible, the associated kidney failure can be treated, and
the cat’s life prolonged. It’s important to note that the first step in treating PKD is determining whether or not your
cat has it, or is at risk for it. This can be done with a fairly inexpensive DNA test. Make sure to consult a qualified
